John William Ramsay, 13th Earl of Dalhousie , KT , PC (born January 29, 1847 Aberdour House , Aberdour , † November 25, 1887 in Le Havre ) was a Scottish nobleman, soldier and politician.

Family and title

Ramsay was born on January 29, 1847, the eldest son of British Vice Admiral George Ramsay and his wife Sarah Frances Robertson. He had three brothers. On December 6, 1877, he married Lady Ida Louisa Bennet, daughter of Charles Bennet, 6th Earl of Tankerville, in St. James's Church . With the death of his father on July 20, 1880, his title Earl of Dalhousie passed on to him.

After a trip to the United States , Ramsay and his wife had to interrupt their return journey to Scotland in Le Havre because of Lady Ramsay's sudden illness. Although she sought medical treatment, she died on November 24, 1887 of sepsis . The following night, Ramsay suffered a stroke and died less than 24 hours after his wife. The couple were buried together in the Cockpen cemetery, near the family home of Dalhousie Castle . With the death of Ramsay, the title of Earl to Dalhousie passed to his eldest son Arthur George . He also left a fortune of £ 11,438 . The second eldest son, Patrick Ramsay , joined the Foreign Service and became British Ambassador to Greece , Hungary and Denmark . Ramsay's third son, Alexander , made a career in the Royal Navy and married Princess Patricia of Connaught on February 27, 1919 .

Professional background

After joining the army, Ramsay achieved the rank of captain . Between 1874 and 1880 he was stable master of the Duke of Edinburgh . In 1875, he also earned a degree at Balliol College of Oxford University . In the election to the British House of Commons in 1880 , he won the seat for Liverpool as a candidate for the Liberal Party . However, he had to give this up again in July of the same year in order to succeed his father as head of the family. He was also, as Lord-in-Waiting of Queen Victoria , from 1880 to 1885 a member of the House of Lords under William Ewart Gladstone . On 7 December 1881 it stood the Queen in the knighthood . In April 1886 he took over the post of Minister for Scotland in Gladstone's cabinet as the successor to George Trevelyan . At the same time he was appointed a member of the Privy Council by Queen Victoria .
