Gordon Castle

Gordon Castle is a country house in the village of Gight near Fochabers in the Scottish county of Moray . The house, originally called the Bog-of-Gight , was the headquarters of the Dukes of Gordon . After being remodeled in the 18th century, it became one of the largest country houses ever built in Scotland. Much of it has since been torn down.

The original country house had George Gordon, 2nd Earl of Huntly , built in the 1470s; his grandson had it expanded.

Scottish architect John Adam , along with French architect Abraham Roumieu, was commissioned to remodel the country house in 1764, but the plans were never implemented. Later the contract fell to the lesser-known architect John Baxter from Edinburgh , who finally rebuilt Gordon Castle in 1769 on behalf of Alexander Gordon, 4th Duke of Gordon . A medieval tower called Bog-of-Gight with six floors was integrated in the four-story central block . Two two-story wings were attached to the side. The main facade was 173 meters long. Most of the country house was demolished, but the bog-of-gight and one of the wing structures - now a small country house of its own - have survived to this day.
