John Spencer, 5th Earl Spencer

John Poyntz Spencer, 5th Earl Spencer KG PC (born October 27, 1835 in London , † August 13, 1910 in Althorp ) was a British liberal politician.

Life

Spencer was the son of Frederick Spencer, 4th Earl Spencer . He attended Harrow School from 1848 to 1854 , and then Trinity College at the University of Cambridge , where he received his master's degree in 1857 . In 1857 he was elected to the House of Commons for the constituency of South Northamptonshire , but moved to the House of Lords in December as he inherited the title of Earl Spencer after the death of his father . On July 8, 1858, he married Charlotte Seymour. However, the marriage remained childless.

From 1868 to 1874 Spencer was Lord Lieutenant of Ireland . He held this office a second time from 1882 to 1885. The Phoenix Park murders also fall into this second term . He was also Lord President of the Council from 1880 to 1883 and in 1886 . He held the office of First Lord of the Admiralty from 1892 to 1895.

After Spencer died on August 13, 1910, without leaving a male heir, the title Earl Spencer passed to his half-brother Charles .
