Althorp House is an estate with a large manor house in the English county of Northamptonshire . It is about eight kilometers northwest of Northampton . Althorp is the ancestral home of the noble Spencer family . The mansion was built in 1688 by the Earl of Sunderland .

The grave of Lady Diana , the first wife of the British heir to the throne Charles, Prince of Wales , is on a small island in the middle of the lake belonging to the estate.
