Frederick Spencer, 4th Earl Spencer KG CB PC ( April 14, 1798 - December 27, 1857 ) was a British admiral and politician.

Life

He was a younger son of George Spencer, 2nd Earl Spencer (1758-1834) and the Lady Lavinia Bingham, daughter of Charles Bingham, 1st Earl of Lucan .

From 1808 to 1811 he attended Eton College and then entered the Royal Navy as an officer candidate . During the Napoleonic Wars he was deployed in the Mediterranean from 1811 to 1815 . In 1821 he received the rank of commander and his first command of his own. In the Greek War of Independence he distinguished himself in 1827 at the Battle of Navarino and in 1828 took part in the landing operations of the Morea Expedition . For his services he was accepted as a Companion in the British Order of the Bath in 1827 , in 1828 as Chevalier of the French Ordre royal et militaire de Saint-Louis and awarded the Russian Order of Saint Anne . Around 1829 he was awarded the Greek Order of Savior .

After the war he was active in politics. For the first time in 1831 he was elected to the House of Commons . From 1831 to 1832 he was MP for Worcestershire and from 1832 to 1834 and again from 1837 to 1841 MP for Midhurst . He belonged to the Whigs party .

In 1845, when his eldest brother John Spencer, 3rd Earl Spencer died childless, he inherited his estate and title as 4th Earl Spencer . A seat in the House of Lords was also associated with his nobility titles .

From July 1846 to September 1848 he held the court office of Lord Chamberlain of the Household and was accepted into the Privy Council . In 1849 he was accepted into the Order of the Garter as a Knight Companion . In early 1854 he took over the post of Lord Steward of the Household as the successor to the Duke of Norfolk . In 1852 he was promoted to the rank of Rear Admiral and in 1857 to Vice Admiral .
