The Morea Expedition (French: Expédition de Morée ) was a French military operation between 1828 and 1833. It took place at the time of the Greek Revolution and led to the Peloponnese , then called Morea. The military goal was to weaken the influence of the Ottoman Empire . In April 1826 Mesolongi had been taken by the Ottoman Empire after several sieges. On October 20, 1827, a fleet of French, English and Russians won the naval battle at Navarino . In 1828 the expeditionary corps went ashore at Koroni and stayed there until 1833. The military operation was under the command of Nicolas-Joseph Maison , who commanded around 13,000 soldiers.

The records of the scholars, engineers and artists who accompanied the expedition and documented the landscape, fauna, flora and archaeological sites are considered to be a lasting value of the expedition.
