family

Hamilton came from a Scottish aristocratic family who had played an important role in Scottish history since the 13th century. He was a later son of James Hamilton, 1st Duke of Abercorn and Lady Louisa Jane Russell (1812-1905). The address Lord was therefore a purely courtesy title , Hamilton was not formally raised to the nobility until January 1, 1903, when he was made Knight Grand Commander of the Order of the Star of India . Instead of the associated title "Sir", he continued to use the higher-ranking courtesy title of "Lord".

In 1871, Hamilton married Lady Maud Caroline Lascelles (1846-1938), a daughter of Henry Lascelles, 3rd Earl of Harewood and the Lady Louisa Thynne. The marriage resulted in three sons: Ronald James Hamilton (1872-1958), who went into the diplomatic service, Anthony George Hamilton (1874-1936) and Robert Cecil Hamilton (1882-1947). The latter took up careers in the Army and Navy.

Political activity

Hamilton studied at the University of Glasgow and after completing his studies worked as a justice of the peace in Middlesex and Westminster.

In 1868 Hamilton was elected as a Conservative MP for the Middlesex constituency in the House of Commons , the British lower house. He held the seat for Middlesex without interruption until 1885, after which, from 1885 to 1906, he was a member of parliament as a member of parliament for the constituency of Ealing .

From 1874 to 1878, Hamilton served as State Secretary in the Ministry of India , then from 1878 to 1880 as Vice-President of the Committee on Education. The high point of his career was his activity as First Lord of the Admiralty in the first two Governments of Salisbury (1885-1886 and 1886-1892). In this capacity, among other things, he introduced the two-power standard in 1889 , which was to be valid as a principle of British naval armament until the First World War . In 1894, while his party was in opposition, Hamilton assumed the role of chairman of the London Schools Committee. From 1895 to 1903, Hamilton served as India Minister in the 3rd Salisbury government and the Balfour government . In addition, Hamilton had been a member of the Privy Council , the British Privy Council , since 1878 . Hamilton was Dr. jur. and Dr. phil. the latter hc and Captain of Deal Castle.
