The Salisbury III Cabinet was formed on June 25, 1895 by Prime Minister Robert Gascoyne-Cecil, 3rd Marquess of Salisbury , and served 2,574 days through June 11, 1902.
Cabinet formation and general elections in 1895 and 1900
After the general election in 1895 , a coalition of Conservative Party and Liberal Unionists was formed. Both parties won 1,894,772 votes and 411 of the 670 seats. The Liberal Party under the previous Prime Minister Archibald Primrose, 5th Earl of Rosebery , won 1,765,266 votes, due to the current majority voting system, only 177 seats. The third strongest force was the Irish Parliamentary Party under Justin McCarthy , with 152,959 votes and 82 seats.
The chairman of the Conservative Tories , Marquess of Salisbury, assumed the office of Prime Minister for the third time, while his nephew Arthur Balfour , head of government in the House of Commons , became First Lord of the Treasury . Several important posts went to leaders of the Liberal Unionists, in particular to the leader of the Liberal Unionists in the House of Lords , Spencer Cavendish, 8th Duke of Devonshire , the Lord President of the Council was. His party friend Joseph Chamberlain became Minister of Colonialism.
The Second Boer War , which lasted from 1899 to 1902, fell in Salisbury's tenure . The successful course of the war for the United Kingdom contributed to the victory of the coalition parties in the general election in 1900 . With 1,767,958 votes, the Conservative Party and the Liberal Unionists won 402 seats and lost only nine seats. The Liberal Party, now chaired by Henry Campbell-Bannerman , won 1,572,323 votes and got 183 seats in parliament.
On July 11, 1902, the Marquess of Salisbury joined as Prime Minister and Chairman of the Conservative Party and was then replaced by Arthur James Balfour.
