Several important posts went to leaders of the Liberal Unionists, in particular to the leader of the Liberal Unionists in the House of Lords , Spencer Cavendish, 8th Duke of Devonshire , the Lord President of the Council was. His party friend Joseph Chamberlain became Minister of Colonialism.

The Second Boer War , which lasted from 1899 to 1902, fell in Salisbury's tenure . The successful course of the war for the United Kingdom contributed to the victory of the coalition parties in the general election in 1900 . With 1,767,958 votes, the Conservative Party and the Liberal Unionists won 402 seats and lost only nine seats. The Liberal Party, now chaired by Henry Campbell-Bannerman , won 1,572,323 votes and got 183 seats in parliament.

On July 11, 1902, the Marquess of Salisbury joined as Prime Minister and Chairman of the Conservative Party and was then replaced by Arthur James Balfour.
