Rosebery government
The Rosebery government was formed on March 5, 1894 in Great Britain by Prime Minister Archibald Primrose, 5th Earl of Rosebery and replaced the fourth Gladstone government . She was in office until June 21, 1895 and was then replaced by the third Salisbury government.
Cabinet formation and election of the House of Commons in 1895
After the previous Prime Minister William Ewart Gladstone resigned on March 3, 1894 after the rejection of his draft law for the self-government of Ireland ( Home Rule Bill 1893 ) , the previous Foreign Minister Archibald Primrose, 5th Earl of Rosebery, was his successor. His Liberal Party , however, had no majority in the lower house ( House of Commons ) , but placed after the elections of July 1892 272 MPs, while the Conservative Party under former prime minister Robert Cecil, 3rd Marquess of Salisbury asked 268 members of the House . Since 336 members were required for a majority in the 670-seat House of Commons, Gladstone and his successor Rosebery formed minority governments, which were initially supported by the 85 members of the Irish Parliamentary Party under Justin McCarthy . The fourth strongest force in the House of Commons were the Liberal Unionists under Spencer Cavendish, 8th Duke of Devonshire , which had 77 MPs.
After the general election in 1895 , a coalition of Conservative Party and Liberal Unionists was formed. Both parties won 1,894,772 votes and 411 of the 670 seats. The Liberal Party under the previous Prime Minister Earl of Rosebery won 1,765,266 votes, due to the prevailing majority vote only 177 seats. The third strongest force was the Irish Parliamentary Party under Justin McCarthy, with 152,959 votes and 82 seats.
