Richard Knight Causton, 1st Baron Southwark ( September 25, 1843 - February 23, 1929 ) was a British Liberal Party politician who was a Member of the House of Commons and Paymaster General for 27 years .

Life

Causton was the son of a publisher and worked for Sir Joseph Causton and Sons Ltd, founded by his father .

On March 31, 1880, Causton was elected as a candidate for the Liberal Party for the first time as a member of the House of Commons and represented the constituency of Colchester there until November 24, 1885 . On February 17, 1888 he was again elected a member of the House of Commons and now represented the constituency of Southwark West until January 15, 1910 .

During the tenures of Prime Ministers William Ewart Gladstone and Archibald Philip Primrose, 5th Earl of Rosebery , Causton served as Treasurer of the Household in the Office of Lord Steward of the Household between August 1892 and June 1895 .

In 1905 he was appointed by Prime Minister Henry Campbell-Bannerman as Paymaster General (Paymaster General) in his government and held this position under Campbell-Bannerman's successor Herbert Henry Asquith until his replacement by Ivor Churchill Guest, Baron Ashby St Ledgers in 1910. 1906 he was also appointed Privy Counselor .

After leaving the government, Causton was raised to hereditary nobility by a letters patent dated July 13, 1910 as Baron Southwark , of Southwark in the County of London , and was thus a member of the House of Lords until his death . He was also temporarily Lieutenant of the City of London and in 1913 President of the London Chamber of Commerce , the Chamber of Commerce of London.

Since his marriage on August 10, 1871 with Selina Mary Chambers, daughter of Thomas Chambers , who was also a member of the House of Commons for 25 years, remained childless, the title of nobility Baron Southwark expired on his death in 1929.
