MacDonald's First Administration

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The first MacDonald government was formed in the United Kingdom on January 23, 1924 by Prime Minister Ramsay MacDonald of the Labor Party , replacing the Bonar Law government . The government consisted exclusively of Labor Ministers; she was in office until November 4, 1924, when she was replaced by the second Baldwin government. The first Baldwin government was also the first British government to be established by the Labor Party.

In the previous general election on December 6, 1923 , the Conservative Party had lost its previous absolute majority in the House of Commons . Of the 615 seats, the Labor Party only had 191 seats and the Conservative Tories 258 seats. However, the reunited Liberal Party prevented the formation of a renewed conservative government with 158 seats in the lower house. However, the unclear majorities led to the failure of the first Labor government. In the general election on October 29, 1924 - the third election within two years - MacDonald's Labor Party received only 151 seats out of 615, while the Conservative Party had a clear absolute majority with 412 seats. At the same time, the new elections led to a decisive reduction in the influence of the Liberal Party, which only had 40 members. Other parties had 12 mandates.
