Sydney Haldane Olivier, 1st Baron Olivier KCMG CB PC (born April 16, 1859 in Colchester , Essex , † February 15, 1943 ) was a British ministerial official and politician who served as acting governor in 1904 and governor of the crown colony of Jamaica from 1907 to 1913 , in 1924 briefly was Minister for India . In 1924 he was promoted to a peer and was a member of the House of Lords until his death .

Life

Olivier, whose father the Anglican clergyman Reverend Henry Arnold Olivier, graduated from the Kineton School and the Tonbridge School after school in Lausanne , studying at Corpus Christi College at the University of Oxford , graduating in 1881 with a Bachelor of Arts (BA) . After he joined in 1882 as an official in the Colonial Office ( Colonial Office ) and was active in this until the 1920s. During this period he was Acting Colonial Secretary of the Crown Colony of British Honduras from 1890 to 1891 and later Auditor General of the Leeward Islands from 1895 to 1896 , before becoming Private Secretary to William Palmer, 2nd Earl of Selborne , who was Undersecretary from 1895 to 1900, between 1896 and 1897 was in the Colonial Ministry.

Olivier, who was appointed Companion of the Order of St. Michael and St. George (CMG) for his services in 1898 , was Colonial Secretary of the Crown Colony of Jamaica from 1899 to 1904 and, in this capacity, acting Governor of the Crown Colony of Jamaica for some time in 1904. In 1907 he was made Knight Commander of the Order of St. Michael and St. George (KCMG) and from then on carried the suffix "Sir".

In 1907 Olivier succeeded Hugh Clarence Bourne as Governor of the Crown Colony of Jamaica and held this office until he was replaced by Phillip Clarke Cork in 1913. For his long service he was awarded an honorary doctorate in law (LL.D.) from the University of Edinburgh in 1911 and he was also appointed Companion of the Order of the Bath in 1917.

On January 22, 1924, Olivier, who was also involved in the Fabian Society , was appointed Minister for India (Secretary of State for India) by Prime Minister Ramsay MacDonald in his cabinet and held this position until the end of MacDonald's term on November 3 1924. On January 23, 1924, the day after his appointment as minister, he was also appointed Privy Counselor .

Two weeks later, on February 9, 1924, he was raised to the hereditary nobility by a letters patent as Baron Olivier , of Ramsden in the County of Oxford, and was thus a member of the House of Lords until his death. In addition to his long ministerial and political career, he has written numerous books dealing with colonial and historical topics.

His marriage to Margaret Cox on May 21, 1885 resulted in four daughters. Since he died without male descendants, the title of Baron Olivier expired with his death.
