The Secretary of State for India ("Secretary of State for India") was a ministerial post of the British government created on the basis of the Government of India Act of August 2, 1858 , mostly with the rank of cabinet . The Secretary of State was the political head of the India Office , the British Government's agency responsible for administering British India . He was supported by a parliamentary undersecretary and a permanent undersecretary.

After Burma was separated from the British Raj in 1937, the office was named Secretary of State for India and Burma . After the partition of India in 1947 and the independence of India and Pakistan , the post of Secretary of State for Burma still existed until 1948 , which was abolished after the independence of Myanmar .
