Carl Kraft (politician)

Carl Kraft , also Karl (born September 18, 1874 in Nieste ; † June 25, 1952 in Kassel ) was a German farmer and politician ( SPD ).

Life

Carl Kraft was born the son of a worker. After attending primary school, he completed an apprenticeship as a horn turner and worked as a turner in a stick factory from 1899. Later he worked as a farmer in Nieste. He did military service from 1894 to 1896 and took part in the First World War as a soldier from 1914 to 1918 , including three years in Russia .

Kraft joined the SPD in 1902 and was from 1902 to 1926 shop steward and chairman of the Social Democrats in Nieste. He was a member of the municipal council from 1904 to 1919 and served as mayor of Nieste from September 1919 to March 1933 . From 1919 to 1925 was a member of the district committee and from 1928 to 1933 a member of the district assembly of the district of Kassel . In December 1924 he was elected as a member of the Prussian state parliament, to which he was a member until 1933.

After the National Socialists came to power, Kraft was taken into “ protective custody ” and interned in the Breitenau concentration camp from June to July 1933 . After the assassination attempt on July 20, 1944 , he was arrested again in August of the same year as part of the " Operation Grid ", initially to the Wehlheiden prison in Kassel and from there to the Sachsenhausen concentration camp . On October 17, 1944, he was released from concentration camp detention.

Kraft resumed his political activities after the end of World War II and in 1945 became second chairman of the SPD Nieste. From 1945 to 1947 and from 1952 until his death he was again mayor of the municipality of Nieste and at the same time member of the administration of the Kassel district. From 1947 to 1952 he was first district deputy of the Kassel district.
