Shen Baozhen
Shen Baozhen ( Chinese 沈 葆 禎 , Pinyin Shěn Bǎozhēn沈 葆 祯; also: Sím Pó-cheng , Sing Bo-ting , Shen Wensu, 沈 文 肅; born 1820 , Minhou , Fujian ; died December 18, 1879 ) was a Chinese civil servant at the time of Qing Dynasty .
Life
Shen was born in Minhou , Fujian . In the official exams he acquired the title of Zhuangyuan in 1847 and was then appointed to the Hanlin Academy .
His administrative talent caught the attention of Zeng Guofan , who used him in the fight against the Taiping Uprising . After the revolt was put down in 1864, Shen became involved in the Self- Empowerment Movement (洋務 運動) and later worked in the Fuzhou Shipyard . There he used the knowledge of French engineers, such as Prosper Giquel , to manufacture modern war and merchant ships for China.
In 1874 he was also involved in a peace agreement with Japan , which had to be negotiated after the Japanese punitive expedition to Taiwan . In 1875 he was named Viceroy of Liangjiang . He died in 1879.
family
Shen was married to Lin Puqing (1821–77, 林普 晴), the third daughter of Lin Zexu . She became famous for her courage during a siege of Guangxin during the Taiping Uprising .
