Cabinet Wilson I

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The first Wilson government was formed in the United Kingdom on October 16, 1964 by Prime Minister Harold Wilson of the Labor Party and replaced the Douglas Home government .

Previously, Wilson's Labor Party had won the general election on October 15, 1964 and provided 317 of the 630 MPs in the House of Commons , while the previously ruling Conservative Party only had 298 MPs and 15 seats fell to smaller parties. In the early general election of March 31, 1966 , the Labor Party was able to increase its majority and had a comfortable majority in the House of Commons with 364 of the 630 MPs. The conservative Tories only had 250 seats, while 16 seats went to smaller parties. As a result, on April 6, 1966, the Prime Minister made extensive changes to his government. In the general election on June 18, 1970 , Wilson's Labor Party suffered a heavy defeat and only provided 288 of the 630 members of the House of Commons. The Conservative Party won 330 seats, after which a Conservative government under Prime Minister Edward Heath was formed on June 23, 1970 .
