Ray Gunter

Raymond "Ray" Jones Gunter , PC (* 30th April 1909 ; † 12. April 1977 ) was a British trade union functionary and politician of the Labor Party , the 1945 to 1951 and again from 1959 to 1972 member of the House ( House of Commons ) and was a minister several times.

Life

Raymond "Ray" Jones Gunter served during the Second World War with the Royal Engineers of the British Army and was last to Hauptmann (Captain) transported. After the war he was for the Labor Party in the election on July 5, 1945 for the first time as a member of the lower house ( House of Commons ) selected and represented there first the constituency Essex Southeastern until its dissolution on 23 February 1950. In the elections of February 23, 1950 he was re-elected to the House of Commons in the Doncaster constituency, but lost this constituency in the following election on October 25, 1951 to Anthony Barber of the Conservative Party . In the following period he was between 1955 and 1966 member of the National Executive Committee ( NEC ) of the Labor Party. In addition, he replaced James Haworth in 1956 as chairman of the TSSA (Transport Salaried Staffs' Association) trade union for the transport and travel industry and held this position until he was replaced by Thomas "Tom" George Bradley in 1964.

In the election of October 8, 1959 , Ray Gunter was re-elected as a member of the House of Commons and represented the constituency of Southwark until his resignation on March 30, 1972 , whose previous Labor constituency holder and former minister George Isaacs did not run again for reasons of age . As the successor to Anthony "Tony" Greenwood , he became chairman of the National Executive Committee in 1964 and remained in this role of party executive chairman until he was replaced in 1965 by Walter Padley . After the victory of the Labor Party in the general election of October 15, 1964 , he became Minister of Labor in the Wilson I cabinet on October 18, 1964 and held this position until this ministerial office was assigned to the office of Minister for Employment and Productivity ( Secretary of State for Employment and Productivity) Barbara Castle on 6 April 1968. on 19 October 1964 he was elected a member of the secret Privy Council ( Privy Council ) appointed. He himself then replaced Richard Marsh as Minister of Power on April 6, 1968 , and held this ministerial office until July 1, 1968, when Roy Mason succeeded him.

After leaving the House of Commons on March 30, 1972, Ray Gunter was appointed Crown Steward and Bailiff of the Three Hundreds of Chiltern by the Chancellor of the Exchequer , a sinecure used by the British Parliament to allow MPs to leave . His successor as MP was then Harry Lamborn .
