Cledwyn Hughes, Baron Cledwyn of Penrhos CH , PC , (born September 14, 1916 in Holyhead , Anglesey , Wales ; † February 22, 2001 in Denbigh , Denbighshire , Wales) was a British Labor Party politician who served in the constituency for almost 28 years Anglesey as a member of the House of Commons and served as both Minister for Wales and Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food during Prime Minister Harold Wilson's first term .

Life

After visiting the Holyhead Grammar School graduated from Hughes to study law at the University College of Wales Aberystwyth and did during the Second World War, his military service in the volunteer service of the Royal Air Force ( RAF Volunteer Reserve ). After the war he worked as a solicitor with the Holyhead City Council and was also a member of the Board of Directors of the University of Wales and the National Museum of Wales .

Hughes, who began his local political career as a member of the Anglesey County Council and ran unsuccessfully in the Anglesey constituency in 1945 and in 1950 , was a candidate for the Labor Party in the October 25, 1951 general election of the House of Commons and represented the constituency of Anglesey for 28 years until the general election of May 3, 1979 .

After the Labor Party won the general election on October 15, 1964 , he was first appointed Minister of State in the Ministry of Relations with the Commonwealth of Nations , before being appointed Minister for Wales by Prime Minister Harold Wilson in the course of a cabinet reshuffle on April 5, 1966 ( Secretary of State for Wales ). Exactly two years later, he succeeded Fred Peart as Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food on April 5, 1968 , and held that position until the end of Wilson's term on June 18, 1970.

Hughes, who succeeded Ian Mikardo from 1974 to 1979, also chaired the Labor Group ( Chair of the Parliamentary Labor Party ) in the House of Commons, was also President of the University College of Wales Aberystwyth from 1977 to 1985.

After leaving the House of Commons, he was raised to the nobility in 1979 as a Life Peer with the title Baron Cledwyn of Penrhos , of Holyhead in the Isle of Anglesey, and was a member of the House of Lords until his death . During this time he was first deputy leader from 1981 to 1982 and then between 1982 and 1992 leader of the Labor Party in the House of Lords and thus chairman of the Labor faction in the House of Lords, where he again succeeded Fred Peart. Ivor Richard followed him in 1992 as leader of the opposition in the House of Lords.

Throughout his political career, Hughes was particularly committed to the recognition of the Welsh language .
