Chief Secretary for Ireland

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Chief Secretary ( Irish Príomh-Rúnaí ) was a key person in the British administration in Ireland . Formally he was number two in the Lord Lieutenant's administration , but in practice it was often the Chief Secretary in the British Cabinet and not the formally superior Lord Lieutenant.

The office was abolished in 1922 and the powers transferred to the President of the Executive Council of the Irish Free State (now Taoiseach ).
