Savile Brinton Crossley, 1st Baron Somerleyton GCVO PC DL JP ( June 14, 1857 - February 25, 1935 ) was a British politician of the Liberal Party and later the Liberal Unionists , who was a member of the House of Commons and Paymaster General for 13 years was.

Life

Crossley was the son of carpet manufacturer Francis Crossley , who was also a member of the House of Commons for 20 years until his death and on January 23, 1863 Baronet , of Belle Vue in the County of York and of Somerleyton in the County of Suffolk . When his father died on January 5, 1872, he inherited the title of 2nd baronet. He graduated after visiting the Eton College to study at Balliol College of Oxford University . He then did his military service and was promoted to major in 1st Suffolk Yeomanry in 1885 .

On November 24, 1885 Crossley was elected for the Liberal Party as a member of the House of Commons and represented there until July 4, 1892 the constituency of Lowestoft . After he was High Sheriff of Suffolk in 1896 , he took part in the Imperial Yeomanry between 1899 and 1901 in the Second Boer War.

Crossley, who was temporarily also Deputy Lieutenant (DL) of Suffolk and Justice of the Peace (JP) of Norfolk , was again a member of the House of Commons on October 1, 1900 as a candidate of the Liberal Unionists, in which he was now until January 12, 1906 represented the Halifax constituency. During the tenure of Prime Minister Arthur Balfour , he was Paymaster General from July 1902 to December 1905 and was also appointed Privy Counselor (PC).

After retiring, he was from 1906 to 1909 as a colonel commanding warfare officer (Commanding Principal Warfare Officer) of the Royal Garrison Artillery then (RGA) of Norfolk and was for his contribution to the Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order beaten (KCVO).

By a letters patent dated June 26, 1916, Crossley was raised to hereditary peer as Baron Somerleyton , of Somerleyton in the County of Suffolk, and has since been a member of the House of Lords . In 1922 he was also raised to the Knight Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order (GCVO).

His marriage to Phyllis Bathe, daughter of General Henry Percival de Bathe on December 14, 1887 , had five children, including Francis Savile Crossley , who inherited the titles of 2nd Baron Somerleyton and 3rd Baronet after the death of his father .
