John Atkinson, Baron Atkinson PC QC (born December 13, 1844 in Drogheda , County Louth , Ireland , † March 13, 1932 in London ) was an Irish - British lawyer and politician who was a member of the House of Commons for ten years and most recently as Lord of Appeal in Ordinary due to the Appellate Jurisdiction Act 1876 when Life Peer was also a member of the House of Lords .

Life

After attending the Belfast Royal Academy, Atkinson completed a law degree at Queen's College, Galway and was admitted to the bar in 1865 by the Irish Bar Association ( King's Inns ) in Dublin . He then worked as a barrister in Ireland and in 1880 was crown attorney ( Queen's Counsel ) and in 1885 so-called "Bencher" of the Bar Association of King's Inns.

Having to succeed Dodgson Hamilton Madden between 1889 and his replacement by Edward Carson 1892 Solicitor General was for Ireland, he was on 8 July 1895 as the successor to Hugh Hyacinth O'Rorke MacDermot Attorney General ( Attorney General ) for Ireland and held that post for ten years until he was replaced by James Campbell on December 4, 1905. At the same time Atkinson, who also became a member of the Irish Privy Council in 1895, was a member of the House of Commons from July 13, 1895 to 1905, and represented the constituency of Londonderry in this .

Last Atkinson was a Letters Patent of December 19, 1905 due to the Appellate Jurisdiction Act 1876 as a Life Peer with the title Baron Atkinson , of Glenwilliam in the County of Limerick to the House of Lords member in the nobility called and worked until 1928 as Lord Judge ( Lord of Appeal in Ordinary ). He was the first lord judge from Ireland who had not previously held a judge's office. In 1905 he also became Privy Councilor . As a result, he withdrew from active politics and concentrated on Irish issues. He did not resign from his judicial office until 1928.
