Appellate Jurisdiction Act 1876
The Appellate Jurisdiction Act 1876 was a law in the United Kingdom that governed the jurisdiction of the House of Lords in relation to appeals . With the Constitutional Reform Act 2005 , the newly regulated among others the responsibility of appeal procedures and to the Supreme Court of the land transferred, which was Appellate Jurisdiction Act repealed.
The Appellate Jurisdiction Act , which came into force on August 11, 1876, originally stipulated that the House of Lords was the final instance of appeal for the following courts:
- Her Majesty's Court of Appeal in England ,
- any court in Scotland , or directly if the House of Lords had jurisdiction by law or statute ,
- any court in Ireland , or directly where the House of Lords had jurisdiction by law or statute .
In addition, the Appellate Jurisdiction Act appointed the Lord Judges (Lord of Appeal in Ordinary), who became members of the House of Lords as Life Peers .
