David Edmond Neuberger, Baron Neuberger of Abbotsbury, PC ([ ˈdeɪvɪd ˈnjuːbɜːrɡər ]; born January 10, 1948 in London ) is a British lawyer . He was Master of the Rolls from 2009 to 2012 , the second highest judge in England and Wales and previously a Lord of Appeal in Ordinary . From 2012 to 2017 he was President of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom .

family

Neuberger is of German-Jewish origin. He is the son of Albert Neuberger , a professor of chemical pathology at St Mary's Hospital of the University of London , and his wife Lilian. His uncle was Rabbi Herman N. Neuberger . Neuberger's brothers embarked on a scientific career. James is Professor of Medicine at the University of Birmingham , Michael was Professor of Molecular Immunology at the University of Cambridge and Anthony is a professor of finance at the Warwick Business School of the University of Warwick .

Neuberger married Angela Holdsworth , a television producer and writer , in 1976 . They have three children, a daughter and two sons, who are all solicitors .

Life

David Neuberger attended the private Westminster School at Westminster Abbey and studied chemistry at the Christ Church College at the University of Oxford . After his graduation he worked from 1970 to 1973 at the Handelsbank NM Rothschild & Sons .

In 1974 Neuberger was admitted to the Lincoln's Inn Bar Association . In 1993 he became Associate Judge (Bencher) and in 1987 Crown Attorney . From 1990 to 1996 he was a recorder , then he became a judge in the Chancery Division and was promoted to Knight Bachelor . In 2001 he became a Supervisory Chancery Judge for Midland , Wales and Chester and for Western Circuits . He held this office until 2004, when he was promoted to Lord Justice of Appeal and became a member of the Privy Council .

From 2004 to 2007 he was a joint head of the Falcon chambers . From 2006 to 2007 he led an investigation into the entry requirements to the chamber. He was also a member of the Panel on Fair Access to the Professions , chaired by former Health Minister Alan Milburn .

Membership in the House of Lords

On January 11, 2007 he succeeded Donald Nicholls, Baron Nicholls of Birkenhead as Lord of Appeal in Ordinary and was named Life Peer as Baron Neuberger of Abbotsbury , of Abbotsbury in the County of Dorset , and on January 15, 2007 between Thomas Henry Bingham and his sister-in-law Julia Neuberger officially introduced to the House of Lords . His rise to the Court of Appeal and the House of Lords is one of the fastest in recent times.

Although Patrick Devlin, Baron Devlin , was younger than 55 when he was appointed in 1960, Neuberger was the youngest current Law Lord.

He was occasionally present on meeting days, never spoke up and took part in a single vote.

On July 23, 2009, it was announced that he would be named Master of the Rolls , succeeding Anthony Clarke, Baron Clarke of Stone-cum-Ebony , who became one of the founding judges of the Supreme Court . This appointment became effective October 1, 2009. As Senior Lord , he has been excluded from participation since 2009.

In May 2010, Neuberger announced a controversial minority decision that the Unite union was not in compliance with the voting rules under union law. In July 2010, he ruled that peace activists in Parliament Square must be evacuated after losing on appeal.

Further offices and honors

In 1997, Neuberger Chairman (Chairman) of the Advisory Committee on spoilation of Art during the Holocaust and in 2003 Chairman (Chairman) of the Schizophrenia Trust . In 2000 he became Governor of the University of the Arts London . Since 2009 he has been an Advisory Council of the National Archives and the Magna Carta Trust .

In 2008 Neuberger became an honorary member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors , and in 2017 he was elected to the Royal Society .
