Anthony Clarke, Baron Clarke of Stone-cum-Ebony
Anthony Peter Clarke, Baron Clarke of Stone-cum-Ebony , PC (born May 13, 1943 in Ayr , Scotland ) is a British lawyer who has been a member of the House of Lords since 2009 and a judge at the then newly established Supreme Court from 2009 to 2017 of the United Kingdom .
life and career
He was born to a Scottish mother and an English father and attended Oakham School . He jokingly said that his interest in a career in the judiciary was first aroused in 1957 by the trial of alleged serial killer John Bodkin Adams . He was a student of the famous naval attorney Sir Barry Sheen. Clarke studied economics and law at King's College of the University of Cambridge .
He was admitted to the Middle Temple Bar in 1965 and specialized in commercial and maritime law. In 1979 he was appointed Crown Attorney . From 1985 to 1992 he was a recorder who sat in both criminal and civil courts. In 1993 he became a high court judge and received the customary knighting bachelor's degree . He was assigned to the Queen's Bench Division . In April 1993 he succeeded Mr. Justice Sheen as Admiralty Judge . He was owned by the Admiralty Court , Commercial Court, and Crown Court , where he handled both commercial and criminal cases.
In 1998 he was appointed to the Court of Appeal of England and Wales and a member of the Privy Council . Shortly thereafter, he processed the Thames Safety Inquiry regarding the Merchant Shipping Act 1995 and the Marchioness disaster investigation the following year . In 2005 he was appointed Master of the Rolls and on April 11, 2011, he was appointed Temporary Judge of the Court of Final Appeal in Hong Kong .
He has been married to Rosemary Adam since 1968 and has two sons and a daughter with her.
Membership in the House of Lords
On April 15, 2009, it was announced that Clarke would receive a Life Peerage and was raised to Life Peer on April 29, 2009 as Baron Clarke of Stone-cum-Ebony , of Stone-cum-Ebony in the County of Kent . Its official inauguration into the House of Lords took place on June 1, 2009, with the assistance of Nicholas Phillips, Baron Phillips of Worth Matravers and Igor Judge, Baron Judge . In parliament he is a member of the Crossbenchers .
From October 1, 2009 to 2017, he was a judge on the Supreme Court . During this time he was excluded from participation in the House of Lords.
