Lawrence Antony Collins, Baron Collins of Mapesbury PC , QC , FBA (* 7. May 1941 ) is a British lawyer and was 2009-2011 judge at the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom .

life and career

Collins was born on May 7, 1941 to Sol Collins and Phoebe Barnett. He received his education at the City of London School . From there he moved to Downing College at the University of Cambridge . There he obtained his bachelor's degree and then obtained his doctorate in law . Collins received his MA from Columbia University .

In 1968, Collins was approved as a solicitor . From 1971 to 2000 he was a partner in the London law firm Herbert Smith , where he headed the litigation and arbitration department from 1995 to 1998 .

Collins has been visiting professor at Queen Mary University in London since 1982 . On March 27, 1997, he was appointed Crown Attorney by Queen Elizabeth II . This makes him one of only two practicing lawyers to have received this honor. While working as a lawyer, he tried cases before the English Court of Appeal, the House of Lords and the European Court of Justice . He also advised the government of Chile on the extradition proceedings against Augusto Pinochet .

He was Head of the Litigation and Arbitration Department at Herbert Smith from 1995 to 1998 . He and Arthur Marriott were the first two practicing solicitors to be appointed Queen's Counsel on March 27, 1997 . As a solicitor advocate he appeared for the English Court of Appeal , the Judicial Committee of the House of Lords and the European Court of Justice .

Activity as a judge

From 1997 to 2000, Collins was a deputy judge at the High Court of Justice. On January 11, 2007, Collins' appointment as Judge of the Court of Appeal was announced.

Collins was named Deputy High Court Judge in 1997 and became a full-time judge in the Chancery Division on September 28, 2000 , leaving Herbert Smith. He was the first solicitor to be appointed judge of the High Court of England and Wales directly from his private practice and the second to be appointed after Sir Michael Sachs in 1993, who had previously been a circuit judge for nine years . On November 22, 2000, he was beaten to Knight Bachelor .

One major case in 2006 involved file sharers who refused to reach an agreement with the British Phonographic Industry to pay thousands of pounds.

His appointment as Lord Justice of Appeal (judge at the Court of Apeal ) was announced on 11 January 2007 and he was a month later a member of the Privy Council . On April 8, 2009, it was announced that he would replace Leonard Hoffmann, Baron Hoffmann , who retired on April 20, 2009, as Lord of Appeal in Ordinary . He is the first solicitor to hold such a high position in the judiciary.

Since 1987 he has been editor ( General Editor ) of Dicey & Morris , one of the standard works on the Conflict of Laws , which was renamed Dicey, Morris and Collins from the 14th edition in 2006 . Collins is also the author of numerous other books and articles on private international law.

In 2001 he became Associate Judge ( Bencher ) of the Inner Temple Bar Association . Since 2004 he has been a member of the Advisory Committee on Private International Law at the Department for Constitutional Affairs / Ministry of Justice .

Membership in the House of Lords

On April 21, 2009 he was appointed Life Peer and Law Lord as Baron Collins of Mapesbury , of Hampstead Town in the London Borough of Camden . On April 28, 2009 he was officially inducted into the House of Lords . From 2007 to 2009 he was Lord Justice of Appeal . On October 1, 2009, he and nine other Lords of Appeal in Ordinary were judges of the Supreme Court . In the House of Lords, he first sat as a crossbencher .

From 2009 until the end of his term in the Supreme Court on May 7, 2011, he was excluded from voting in the House of Lords as a senior judge.

He married Sara Shamni in 1983, from whom he is now divorced. They have a son and a daughter together.

Honors

Collins is the recipient of the George Long Prize . In 1963 he was a McNair Scholar .

He has been a fellow of Wolfson College since 1975 and became a fellow of the British Academy in 1994 .

He is a member of the Institut de Droit International . In 2000 he became an honorary member of the Law Society of England and Wales .
