Lord Judge
Lord Justice (English Lords of Appeal in Ordinary or shortly Law Lords ) were judge and ex-officio members of the House of Lords , the British House of Lords . As representatives of the House of Lords, they were the highest appellate body in the British judiciary until the newly created Supreme Court began working in 2009. Since then, the House of Lords has also been relieved of all other judicial functions and the office of Lord Judge created with the appellate case law of 1876 has therefore been made obsolete.
vocation
The number of active lord judges was originally limited to two according to the appellate case law of 1876. The number increased to three in 1882, four in 1891, six in 1913, seven in 1919, nine in 1947 and 11 Law Lords in 1968. Since 1994 the number of Lord Judges has been limited to twelve people. They were proposed by the Prime Minister and then formally appointed by the monarch . A lord judge had to retire at the age of 70. At the request of the government, the retirement age could be extended to a maximum of 75 years.
Administration
The Lord Judges traditionally did not take part in the political debates in the House of Lords in order to preserve the impartiality of their judicial office and to preserve the separation of powers. The Lord Justices retained their upper house seats for life even after they retired. Former lord judges and incumbents of other high judicial offices could also participate in proceedings as lord judges according to the appellate case law of 1876. In practice, this right was rarely exercised.
The lord judges also included:
- the Lord Chief Justice
- the Lord High Chancellor , who was originally the spiritual and secular advisor (" Chancellor ") to the King of England and keeper of the royal seal , now Minister of Justice and President of the House of Lords and President of the Court of Appeal (England and Wales) .
