Geoffrey Lane, Baron Lane
Geoffrey Dawson Lane, Baron Lane AFC PC QC (born July 17, 1918 in Derby - † August 22, 2005 ) was a British lawyer.
Life
He attended Trinity College , Cambridge , where he graduated in 1939. During the Second World War he served in the Royal Air Force , where he flew a Wellington bomber , rose to major and commanded a squadron . He was awarded the Air Force Cross in 1943 .
In 1946 he was inducted into the Gray's Inn Bar Association. He specialized in criminal trials in the Midland and Oxford counties. In 1962 he became crown attorney . He charged some of the perpetrators of the great mail train robbery .
In 1966 he became a judge of the Queen's Bench Division and received the compulsory knighthood.
Lane became a judge on the Court of Appeal of England and Wales in 1974 and Lord of Appeal in Ordinary in October 1979 . This went hand in hand with his elevation to Life Peer as Baron Lane, of St Ippollitts in the County of Hertfordshire .
From 1980 to 1992 he was Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales .
He died in 2005 and was buried in St. Ippolyts near Hitchin in Hertfordshire.
