Roger John Laugharne Thomas, Baron Thomas of Cwmgiedd PC (born October 22, 1947 in Wales ) is a British lawyer and has been Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales since 2013 .

Youth and education

Thomas is a son of Roger Edward Laugharne Thomas and his wife Dinah Agnes Thomas, from Cwmgiedd .

He went to Rugby School and Trinity Hall in Cambridge , where he received a Bachelor of Arts . He was elected a Fellow of Trinity Hall in 2004. He then graduated from the University of Chicago as a Juris Doctor and became a Commonwealth Fellow .

He taught from 1965 to 1966 as an assistant teacher at Mayo College in Ajmer , India .

Professional career

Thomas was sworn in at Gray's Inn in 1969 . He is born in 1984 Attorney-General ( Queen's Counsel ) and 1987 municipal judge ( recorder ) . He worked as a member of the chambers for commercial matters ( Commercial Chambers ) in the fourth Essex Court of The Temple , in 1994 after Lincoln's Inn Fields moved and since then Essex Court Chambers is called.

On behalf of the Department of Trade and Industry , he conducted an inspection of Mirror Group Newspapers plc in 1992.

January 11, 1996 he was appointed judge of the High Court of Justice appointed, and got the usual Knight Bachelor , and was a member of the Queen's Bench Division of where he High Court on Commercial Court ( Commercial Court worked) until the Court of Appeal was appointed. On July 14, 2003, Thomas became Lord Justice of Appeal and thus a little later a member of the Privy Council . He served from 2003 to 2006 as Senior Presiding Judge and from 2008 to 2010 as President of the European Councils for the Judiciary .

In October 2008, Thomas became Vice President of the Queen's Bench Division and Deputy Head of Criminal Justice . On October 3, 2011, he succeeded Sir Anthony May as President of the Queen's Bench Division .

On October 1, 2013, he succeeded Igor Judge, Baron Judge Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales . On September 26, 2013 it was announced that he would be accepted as a Life Peer into the House of Lords as soon as he took office as Lord Chief Justice. He became a Life Peer on October 4, 2013, entitled Baron Thomas of Cwmgiedd , of Cwmgiedd in the County of Powys . Immediately after its inception, as a member of the judiciary, under the Constitutional Reform Act 2005, he was excluded from attending meetings of the House of Lords.

Other activities

Thomas is one of the founding members of the European Law Institute , a non-profit organization that conducts research, makes recommendations and gives practical guidance on European legislation with the aim of better legal integration.

He is an Honorary Fellow of Trinity Hall , Cambridge and a Fellow of the Universities of Cardiff , Aberystwyth , Swansea and Bangor, and Honorary Doctorates in Law from the University of Glamorgan , the University of the West of England and the University of Wales .

family

He married Elizabeth Ann Buchanan in 1973, a daughter of SJ Buchanan from Ohio , USA . He has a son and a daughter with her. In Who's Who he mentions gardening, walks and traveling as hobbies .
