Syrian Electronic Army

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Syrian Electronic Army ( Arabic الجيش السوري الإلكتروني, DMG al-Ǧaiš as-sūrī al-iliktrūnī , English Syrian Electronic Army ) is a hacker group that has been operating since 2011 and supports the government of President Bashar al-Assad during the Syrian civil war . In addition to Syrian opposition groups, the attacks also target the media and news agencies such as the New York Times , Reuters and Associated Press , human rights organizations such as Human Rights Watch , universities such as Harvard and companies such as Microsoft .

The exact relationship of the group to the power apparatus of the Syrian state is unclear, a direct connection is denied by the group itself. The use of the top-level domain .sy is only possible with state permission and using the restrictive state networks. In a speech at Damascus University in June 2011, Assad praised the group as a “real army in a virtual reality”.
