James Brian Edward Hutton, Baron Hutton Kt PC QC (born June 29, 1931 in Belfast ) is a British lawyer who was last Lord Judge ( Lord of Appeal in Ordinary ) between 1997 and 2004 and has been a life peer member of the House of Lords since 1997 is. He became known to the general public in January 2004 when he presented the Hutton report that was named after him .

Life

Promotion to Lord Chief Justice of Northern Ireland

After visiting the Shrewsbury School graduated Hutton studying law at Balliol College of Oxford University and the Queen's University Belfast and took to his legal approval in 1954 working as a lawyer in Northern Ireland on.

In 1969 he switched to the civil service and became advisor to the Attorney General of Northern Ireland and in 1970 he was appointed Crown Attorney . After serving as Senior Crown Counsel in Northern Ireland between 1973 and 1979 , he was appointed Judge at the High Court of Justice of Northern Ireland in 1979 and served there until 1988. During this time he was a member of the United Corrections Commission in 1974 and between 1983 and 1990 President of the Northern Irish Mental Health Association and Vice Chairman of the Borders Commission for Northern Ireland from 1985 to 1988.

In 1988 Hutton succeeded Robert Lowry, Baron Lowry as Lord Chief Justice of Northern Ireland and as such headed Northern Ireland's jurisdiction and presided over the Northern Irish Courts, the Court of Appeal, the High Court of Justice and the Crown Court. Shortly after When he was called to this position, he became a Knight Bachelor in 1988 and from then on had the suffix "Sir" and was also appointed Privy Councilor . He held the office of Lord Chief Justice until his replacement by Robert Carswell in 1997.

In March 2015 he was granted a so-called Leave of Absence by the House of Lords .

Lord Hutton, who was a board member of the University of Ulster between 1999 and 2004 , was known in particular between 2003 and 2004 as chairman of the Hutton Commission named after him. In January 2004, the latter submitted the Hutton report on the death of the weapons expert Dr. David Kelly after the Iraq War .
