Peter Millett, Baron Millett

Peter Julian Millett, Baron Millett , PC , QC (born June 23, 1932 ) is a British former judge and barrister .

life and career

Millett was born to Denis and Adele Millett and attended Harrow School in London and Trinity Hall , where he received a Master of Arts degree in Classical Studies and Law in 1954 .

From 1955 to 1957 he was a first lieutenant in the Royal Air Force . In 1955 he was admitted to the Middle Temple Bar Association . In 1959 he joined Lincoln's Inn , where he was named a Bencher in 1980 . From 1958 to 1986 he practiced at the Chancery Bar and from 1962 to 1976 he was an examiner and lecturer in practical property transfer for the Council of Legal Education . From 1967 to 1973, Millett was Junior Counsel with the Department of Trade and Industry for Transfer of Ownership and from 1971 to 1975 a member of the General Council of the Bar .

From 1972 to 1973 he was a member of the Law Commission - Working party on co-ownership of the matrimonial home from 1972 to 1973 and was appointed Crown Attorney the following year .

Millett was a member of the Department of Trade Insolvency Law Review Committee from 1977 to 1982 and became a judge of the High Court of Justice in 1986 , which he remained until 1994. Since 2000, he has also been a non-permanent judge of the Court of Final Appeal of Hong Kong .

From 1991 to 1995 he was President of the West London Synagogue . He is Editor-in-Chief of the Encyclopaedia of Forms and Precedents, LexisNexis .

Membership in the House of Lords

On October 1, 1998, he was named Lord of Appeal in Ordinary and Life Peer as Baron Millett, of St Marylebone in the City of Westminster . The official introduction to the House of Lords took place on October 7, 1998 with the assistance of Nicolas Browne-Wilkinson, Baron Browne-Wilkinson and Harry Woolf . He gave his inaugural speech on November 23, 1999. It was not until 2004 that he spoke up again.

He retired as Lord of Appeal in Ordinary in January 2004.

He is an active Freemason and has been the Metropolitan Grand Master of London for five years since the establishment of a new Metropolitan Grand Lodge in 2003.

After his tenure he only took part in meetings of the House of Lords very occasionally. From 2011 he was absent.

Honors

He became a Knight Bachelor in 1986 and a member of the Privy Council in 1994 . Also in 1994, Millett became an Honorary Fellow of Trinity Hall . In 2000 he received an honorary doctorate in law (Hon LLD) from the University of London .

In 2004 he became treasurer of Lincoln's Inn .

family

Millett has been married to Ann Mireille Harris since 1959. They have two sons and five grandchildren.
