Brian Francis Kerr, Baron Kerr of Tonaghmore , Kt , PC (born February 22, 1948 ) is a British judge and was Lord Chief Justice of Northern Ireland from 2004 to early July 2009 . In June 2009 he was named the last Law Lord .

life and career

Kerr was born on February 22, 1948 to James William Kerr and his wife Kathleen Rose, nee Murray, of Lurgan, County Armagh . He attended St Colman's College in Newry and studied law at Queen's University of Belfast .

In 1970, he was from the Bar of Northern Ireland and in 1974 by the Bar of England and Wales to the Bar of Gray's Inn admitted. He became a Crown Attorney in 1983 and was licensed by the King's Inns Bar Association in 1990 . In 1997 he became Honorary Bencher at Gray's Inn and in 2004 at King's Inn .

He was Junior Crown Counsel for Common Law from 1978 to 1983 and Senior Crown Counsel from 1988 to 1993 .

In 1988 he became Chair of the Mental Health Commission for Northern Ireland .

In 1993, Kerr was appointed Judge of the High Court and received the customary knighting as a Knight Bachelor . In 2004 he was appointed Lord Chief Justice and a member of the Privy Council . He traditionally succeeded Robert Carswell, Baron Carswell as the Northern Irish Lord of Appeal in Ordinary after he retired. He became one of the first justices of the new Supreme Court of the United Kingdom on October 1, 2009 . Kerr was also the youngest member at the time, at 61.

On July 3, 2009, Sir Declan Morgan succeeded him as Lord Chief Justice of Northern Ireland.

Kerr was a member of the Judicial Studies Board Northern Ireland from 1995 to 2004 . From 1995 to 2001 he was a member of the Franco-British Judicial Co-operation Committee . He was Chairman of the Distinction and Meritorious Service Awards Committee Northern Ireland from 1997 to 2001 . In 1999 he was an Eisenhower Fellow for Northern Ireland.

Membership in the House of Lords

On June 29, 2009 he was named a Life Peer under the title Baron Kerr of Tonaghmore , of Tonaghmore in the County of Down , and inducted into the House of Lords on the same day . He is the last person to be named Lord of Appeal in Ordinary. On October 1, 2009, he became one of the judges of the new Supreme Court of the United Kingdom .

Since 2009 he has been disqualified from participation.

Family and private

From his marriage to his wife Gillian, (née Widdowson) two sons were born. Kerr was raised a Roman Catholic , but his religious creed is unknown.
