Duke of Saint Albans is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of England .

Former family residences of the Dukes were Bestwood Lodge in Nottinghamshire and Upper Gatton Park in Surrey .

Award

The title was created on January 10, 1684 for Charles Beauclerk, 1st Earl of Burford . He was an illegitimate son of King Charles II with Nell Gwyn , one of his mistresses .

The house Beauclerk it one of the " bastard lines " of the British royal family Stuart , as well as the equally illegitimate sons of Charles II. Derived families Scott ( Duke of Buccleuch and Queensberry ), FitzRoy ( Duke of Grafton ) and Lennox ( Duke of Richmond and Gordon ) as well as the Catholic Fitz-James (Dukes of Berwick, Duke of Alba, etc.) , who were descended from James II , the brother and successor of Charles II .

Subordinate title

As early as 1676, the later 1st Duke had been given the titles Earl of Burford , in the County of Oxford and Baron Heddington , of Heddington in the County of Oxford. Both belong to the Peerage of England and are listed as subordinate titles to the Dukes.

The 5th Duke, who succeeded his nephew as Duke in 1787 , had inherited the title Baron Vere , of Hanworth in the County of Middlesex , awarded to him in 1750 in the Peerage of Great Britain , from his father, Vere Beauclerk (1699–1781) .

The respective title heir ( heir apparent ) of the Dukes carries the courtesy title Earl of Burford , whose heir the courtesy title Lord Vere . The former family home of the Dukes in Bestwood near Nottingham and Upper Gatton in Surrey were sold several generations ago.
