Alessandro Gherardini: San Girolamo penitente

Alessandro Gherardini (born November 16, 1655 in Florence , † 1726 in Livorno ) was an Italian painter.

Life

His parents were Domenico Gherardini and Lisabetta Socci. At the age of around twenty he attended the Accademia del Disegno drawing school , after which he moved to Pontremoli . In 1682 he left Pontremoli and stayed in several places in northern Italy. After his father's death, he returned to Florence in 1687.

He was mainly influenced by Paolo Veronese and Luca Giordano . His main work was the design of buildings (churches and palaces in Florence, later also buildings for the Augustinian and Cistercian orders ). Later worked abroad, for example in the castles of Schleißheim , Bamberg and Aschaffenburg .

Gherardini's wide range of subjects included mythological, biblical and allegorical subjects.

  • Lucignano : Assunzione della Vergine (Chiesa della Misericordia, canvas painting, created in 1699).
  • Pistoia : Trinità con la Madonna in gloria e Santi (Chiesa di Santa Maria degli Angeli, fresco, around 1709/1712)
