A section of the Kassel – Warburg railway line between Kassel main station and Vellmar - Obervellmar station is known as the Harleshausen curve . The route section is named after today's Kassel district of Harleshausen , through which it leads. The route now mainly used by the RegioTram Kassel was modernized from 2007 to 2013: the new stops at Kirchditmold , Jungfernkopf and Osterberg / EKZ were built and a barrier system at the stop at Jungfernkopf was replaced by an underpass.
history
The Harleshausen Curve was completed on August 29, 1848. In 1913 the section between Kassel-Harleshausen and Kassel Hauptbahnhof was expanded to three tracks. The new track branched off south of the Harleshausen stop and followed the railway line to the west, steadily increasing in height. After about 600 meters, the track crossed the main railway line with a flyover structure and then ran east of the railway line parallel on a railway embankment to shortly before the Kassel main station. The third track enabled express trains running from Westphalia via Kassel main station in the direction of Bebra to use the northern platforms of the main station without having to cross other routes in front of the main station. With the electrification , this route had to be abandoned because the overpass structure was no longer the required height. Today there are still remains of this structure (popularly known as the viaduct ), the second elevated bridge over Steinäcker and the abutment of the bridge over Zentgrafenstraße. During the construction of the Kassel-Kirchditmold stop, the old railway line was used by construction vehicles, which were able to bring construction materials to the embankment.
service
Until December 2013, the Sauerland Express ran over the Harleshausen curve; Now these trains go through the Kassel marshalling yard directly to the Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe station - without going through the curve; the Kassel main station is no longer served. Since December 2013, it has only been used by the RegioTram Kassel, every quarter of an hour during rush hour, otherwise every half hour.

Train stations
Vellmar-Obervellmar
At Vellmar-Obervellmar station , the Vellmar – Volkmarsen line branches off from the Kassel – Warburg line, as does the line through the Kassel marshalling yard to Wilhelmshöhe . In recent years the station has been expanded to include the third track as part of the expansion of the Vellmar – Volkmarsen railway line, which has been officially in operation since December 2013. In addition to the RegioTram , the Regional-Express Korbach – Kassel of the Kurhessenbahn stop there .
Vellmar-Osterberg / EKZ
The converted Vellmar-Osterberg / EKZ stop was inaugurated for the RegioTram Kassel on December 13, 2008. The tracks that run not through the Harleshausen curve to Kassel main station, but through the Kassel marshalling yard to Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe station run directly next to the tracks of the stop .
Kassel-Jungfernkopf
The previous stop at Kassel-Jungfernkopf was also opened on December 13, 2008 . The neighboring barrier system at the junction of Wegmannstraße from Schenkebier Stanne , a former danger point for road traffic, was closed forever on November 24, 2012 and the section of road near the barriers and in the track was dismantled on the same day. From 2011 to 2012, a long-planned underpass was created about 150 m further northeast below the stop between the streets Schenkebier Stanne and Eisenbahnweg in Waldecker Straße . The first vehicle passage happened on the day the barriers were closed.
Kassel-Harleshausen
Harleshausen only got a train station at the beginning of the 20th century, although the railway line had affected the community at that time since 1848; the center of today's Kassel district is about 1000 m northwest of the stop. The first bridge construction, on which Wolfhager Straße (currently part of the B 251 ) at the former train station and today's stop over the Harleshausen curve, was built in 1907. The two magnificent station buildings were demolished when the railroad was electrified. The station pavilion built in the 1970s is closed. Today's Kassel-Harleshausen stop is the only non- barrier-free stop on the Harleshausen curve.
Kassel-Kirchditmold
Today's Kassel-Kirchditmold stop is a new construction and not to be confused with the old stop on the Main-Weser Railway , which was abandoned when the new high-speed line from Hanover to Würzburg was built. When it opened in April 2009, it is the last new stopping point to go into operation on the Harleshausen curve and is located at the transition area from Christbuchenstraße to Steinäcker .
Kassel main train station
The Kassel main station is the end point of the Harleshausen curve. There is a connection for trains of the RegioTram Kassel to and from the Kassel tram network , which is made possible by the double-track tunnel below the main train station, which was inaugurated on August 19, 2007 and has since been passable in both directions.
