Life

Matteo was the son of a tinker from Borgo San Sepolcro. He settled in Siena and became the most famous contemporary painter there. Matteo created graceful images of the Madonna and developed a sense of tension and realism in his work , which can be seen particularly clearly in his various versions of the Bethlehemite child murder. Matteo was a member of the Siena School . His main subjects were the Strage degli Innocenti (bloodbath of the innocent), which he portrayed several times.
