Juan Maldonado

Juan Maldonado , Latin Johannes Maldonatus , French Jean Maldonat (* 1533 in Gandia , † January 5, 1583 in Salamanca ) was a Spanish Jesuit , university teacher and Bible teacher in the Renaissance .

Life

Maldonado studied at about fourteen at the University of Salamanca , where he was a student of Hernán Núñez de Toledo the classical philologist, taught philosophy by Domingo de Soto and taught theology to the Jesuit Cardinal Francisco Toledo .

Maldonatus joined the Jesuit order in 1562 and became a professor at the Collège de Clermont in Paris in 1564 . His lectures attracted many students, including Martin Anton Delrio , and he was later accused of disseminating harmful teachings. He left Paris in 1576 . His Comentarios a los Evangelios , which appeared after his death, remained popular for a long time. A large part of his philosophical and theological writings remained unpublished.

He was a close friend of Michel Montaigne , a cousin of Delrio.
