Life

Benvenuto di Giovanni di Meo del Guasta was born in Siena as the son of Giovanni di maestro Meo del Guasta, who in turn came from San Quirico d'Orcia . With his wife, Jacopa di Tommaso from Cetona , who was married in 1466, Benvenuto di Giovanni had six children, one of whom, Girolamo di Benvenuto , also became known as a painter. Vecchietta was the teacher of Benvenuto di Giovanni . He made his first appearance as an artist in 1453 in the Baptistery of the Cathedral of Siena when he designed frescoes with Il Vecchietta. He added this to the same place seven years later and was also involved in the execution of the floor sgraffito Sibilla Tiburtina in the left aisle and in illuminations in the Libreria Piccolomini of the cathedral. These book miniatures show the influence of Liberale da Verona , who stayed in Siena from 1467 to 1474. The first work dated by him comes from 1466, an annunciazione that was in the Chiesa di San Girolamo in Volterra. During his life he was only active in Siena and the surrounding area, leaving works in Montepulciano , Murlo , Saturnia , Torrita di Siena and Volterra. He created the last signed and dated work in Sinalunga in 1509 . In addition to his work as a painter, he also appeared in public life in Siena. In 1480 he was listed as a captain of the Compania militare San Giusto , one of the four companies (alongside those of Salicotto di Sopra, Salicotto di Sotto and Rialto) of the Contrade Torre. In 1490 he assumed the same responsibility for the Compania militare Borgo Santa Maria , a unit of the Contrada Valdimontone alongside Sant'Angelo a Montone and Samoreci. One of his students was Bernardino Fungai , who studied in his workshop from 1482. He probably died in Siena around or before 1518, since his wife was notarized as a widow from that year.
