Castellina in Chianti (mostly just Castellina) is a municipality in the province of Siena , in the Tuscany region in Italy with 2807 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019).

The place extends over 99.48  km² , the population density is about 22.66 inhabitants / km². It is located about 15 km northwest of Siena and about 35 km south of Florence between the valleys of the Arbia , which rises in the municipality, the Elsa and the Pesa . In addition, the Staggia River flows through the municipality. The place is in the climatic classification of Italian communities in Zone E, 2326 GG.

The municipality includes the districts ( Frazioni ) Canale, Casanuova di Pietrafitta, Caselle Sant'Agnese, Cavallari, Crocefiorentina, Fioraie, Fonterutoli , Lilliano, Macie, Piazza, Rencine, San Leonino, San Quirico, Santa Maria a Grignano, Sant'Agnese and Tregole.

The neighboring municipalities are Barberino Tavarnelle ( FI ), Castelnuovo Berardenga , Greve in Chianti (FI), Monteriggioni , Poggibonsi and Radda in Chianti .

Castellina is located in the Chianti Classico wine-growing region and is characterized by great differences in altitude. The main town is at an altitude of 578 meters, while Castellina Scalo, which belongs to the municipality of Monteriggioni but houses the Castellina train station, is around 180 m. The highest point in the municipality is at 626 m on Monte Cavallaro.

history

Probably of Etruscan origin, Castellina was known as Salingolpe in the Middle Ages . The castle, first mentioned in the 11th century , was converted into a fortress in the 15th century , from which the Rocca di Castellina in Chianti can still be visited today. The Museo archeologico del Chianti Senese was established inside this fortification in 2006 . In addition to the many archaeological finds from the area around Castellina, the landmark of the museum stands out in particular: a big cat's head made of sandstone that sticks out its tongue. The artifact belongs with an Etruscan chariot and painted clay vessels from the 7th to 6th centuries BC. Chr. To the excavation finds that before the First World War in the tumulus were made of Monte Calvario.

  • Castello di Fonterutoli (Fons Rutili, Fonte di Rutilio), 12th century castello. The first owners were the gentlemen from Staggia Senese . In 1208 an agreement on Poggibonsi was signed between the rival republics of Siena and Florence.
  • Castello di Grignano , first mentioned around the year 1000, later came into the possession of the Conti Guidi and was destroyed in 1452 by Ferdinando di Aragona . Was then rebuilt by Florence.
  • Castello di Monternano , castle ruins west of the main town owned by the Squarcialupi family , who came into possession of Florence in 1254.
  • Castello di Rencine , today's castle ruins near Monteriggioni. Erected before the year 1000 and destroyed by Siena on June 23, 1478 in conflict with Florence.
  • Chiesa di Santa Cristina a Lilliano in the district of Lilliano, Romanesque church. Contains works by Aldo Marzi ( Sant'Elisabetta d'Ungheria e Sant'Andrea (1943) and Madonna del Rosario (1950)) and Aldo Ongaro ( Santa Cristina e storie della sua vita (1960)). The 17th-century work Madonna del Rosario tra i Santi Domenico e Francesco is now in the Pinacoteca Nazionale di Siena .
  • Chiesa di San Giorgio in Piazza , church mentioned in 1084. Contains the work Madonna col Bambino ei Santi Giorgio e Francesco from the workshop of Cosimo Rosselli . Located in the district of Piazza in the northern municipality
