Simondio Salimbeni (also written Simondio Salimbèni , * 1597 in Siena ; † September 8 or 11, 1643 ibid) was an Italian painter who was mainly active in Siena.

Life

Salimbeni was the son of Ventura Salimbeni , from whom he received his first training as a painter. After that he was significantly influenced by Rutilio Manetti . Alessandro Casolani, trained by his father, and his son Ilario Casolani had other influences on his work . He worked with the painter, who was nine years his junior, in several churches in Senese, as well as with Crescenzio Gambarelli , a close confidante of Rutilio Manetti, and Sebastiano Folli (Chiesa di San Pietro a Ovile; Chiesa del Santuccio). His draft for a wall painting, created and signed in 1611, can now be viewed in the British Museum in London. Around 1620 he took part in the Tavola del Crocefisso circle with Bernardino Capitelli, Ilario Casolani, Giovan Paolo Pisani and Niccolò Tornioli to create the Oratorio di San Rocco in Siena. The period from the 30s of the 17th century is considered to be its Caravaggesque phase.
