The airport Siena ( Italian Aeroporto di Siena-Ampugnano ) is an Italian regional airport in Tuscany . It is located about twelve kilometers southwest of Siena in the municipality of Sovicille near the village of Ampugnano. The expansion that has been planned for several years is very controversial.

history

Siena Airport was built as a military airfield in the early 1930s and initially served primarily for pilot training. After the Second World War, a civil flight school and an aero club were established here. As early as the mid-1960s, planning began for the expansion and commercial use of the airfield, which was then handed over by the military to the civil aviation authorities. Over the years, limited expansion measures followed, including the extension of the runway from 1000 to then 1260 meters. In 2000 the airport received approval to operate commercial air traffic. In 2003 the runway was extended to almost 1,400 meters.

use

At the moment the airport is still mainly used by general aviation , partly also for regional charter traffic . Since a paratrooper regiment is stationed in Siena , military transport planes are also occasionally guests.

Handling systems

To the west of the runway, which runs in a north-south direction, there are two apron areas. The north apron is primarily used for commercial traffic. There are three parking positions for aircraft the size of an ATR 42 and a 400 square meter terminal building with three check-in counters . The southern apron is only used for general aviation.

Expansion plans

Since the two larger commercial airports in Tuscany are located near Florence and Pisa , i.e. in the north of the region, there has been promising potential for the further development of the airport in Siena for some time, whose catchment area encompasses the center and south of Tuscany. The city of Siena is considered a tourist attraction that is poorly connected by traffic. A new terminal is to be built, the two apron areas mentioned are to be expanded into one large apron, the taxiways are to be expanded and the runway is to be extended to 1,500 meters. These expansion plans met with considerable resistance from local residents. Contrary to the original assumption of an increase in traffic to around 500,000 passengers annually, figures of up to four million passengers per year were put into the world to highlight the negative effects of the expansion.
