Ernesto Calindri (born February 5, 1909 in Certaldo , † June 9, 1999 in Milan ) was an Italian actor .

Life

Calindri began his stage career barely 20 years old. The son of actors (father Manlio comes from Novara and mother Egloge Felletti from Perugia ) received his first engagement in the company of Luigi Carini . In the following seasons he made numerous experiences with Andreina Pagnani / Camillo Pilotto / Nicolino Pescatori / Lamberto Picasso (1928/29), Ruggero Ruggeri (1929/30), Annibale Ninchi (1931/32) and Elsa Merlini / Renato Cialente (1934 / 35). Then followed two years each with Dina Galli and Sergio Tofano / Evi Maltagliati and contracts with Kiki Palmer (1938/39) and again with Maltagliati 1940–1942. Another station Calindris in the war years was the engagement with Giulio Donadio .

This was followed by an outstanding phase in his work, beginning with his role in Agnes Bernauer alongside Vittorio Gassman , among others , in Maria Stuart and Adam and in La Machine à écrire , all of which were directed by Luchino Visconti . Jack Kirkland's Tobacco Road represents the climax of this time in the same constellation . After further stations, Calindri was in the 1950s with his own company next to female stars such as Olga Villi , Laura Carli , Lauretta Masiero and Lia Zoppelli, and often next to Luigi Almirante and in popular Duo next to Franco Volpi on stage. The Piccolo Teatro in Milan gave him the opportunity to play in Shakespeare's Was ihr wollt under Giorgio Strehler ; In 1955/1956 Garinei and Giovannini were an extension of his spectrum with La padrina di Raggio di Luna as a musical comedy.

From 1969 to 1975 Calindri was entrusted with the co-management of “San Babila” in Milan; he also taught acting at the "Accademia dei Filodrammatici". The late successes of the “great old man of Italian theater” were his Arpagone in The Miser under Orazio Costa in 1972 , which he directed himself in a Pirandello play and in 1974f. Eugène Ionesco What a gigantic fraud . His last roles include a musical, Gigi , in which he sang and danced when he was 80, and a Molière piece.

The slim actor with flawless diction and mostly with a mustache made his film debut in 1935 in Freccia d'oro , but, contrary to his theatrical reputation , could not make a great career on the screen; it remained with comparatively few films and supporting roles. Calindri did better on television, comedies, shows (he also ran the Saturday night show Il signore delle 21 ), series and commercials - he was the Cynar man for years .

In 1993 he was appointed Grand Officer of the Republic of Italy.

Calindri's sister is actress Dora ; he had been married to colleague and occasional stage partner Roberta Mari since 1939 .
