Franco Volpi

Franco Volpi (born October 4, 1952 in Vicenza , † April 14, 2009 ibid) was an Italian philosopher and historian of philosophy.

Life

Franco Volpi was professor of the history of philosophy at the University of Padua . He was visiting professor at the Universities of Laval , Quebec (1999), Poitiers (1990), Nice (1993) and Lucerne .

His research focus was German philosophy . He was considered an expert on the works of Arthur Schopenhauer and Martin Heidegger and appreciated the Colombian author Nicolás Gómez Dávila , whose works were popularized by Volpi in Europe and Latin America . Volpi was also the editor of philosophical handbooks (1988 Lexicon of Philosophical Works ; 1999 Large Lexicon of Philosophy ) and renowned translator of German philosophers, a.o. a. by Gadamer , Heidegger, Schopenhauer, Carl Schmitt , Ernst Jünger and Rosa Luxemburg . He worked for the newspaper " La Repubblica " and was a member of the editorial board of the scientific journals Philosophischer Literaturanzeiger , Brentano Studies , Husserl Studies , Les Etudes Philosophiques , International Journal of Philosophy , Iride , Filosofia politica and Informazione filosofica .

For many years, Volpi was - not only because of his extensive translation work - one of the most important mediators between German and Italian-speaking philosophy. Volpi taught for several semesters at the University of Witten / Herdecke , was active in the academic exchange programs of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and the German Academic Exchange Service, and was often invited to individual lectures and conferences at German and Swiss universities.

Volpi died as a result of a bicycle accident.
