Bob Lloyd Schieffer (born February 25, 1937 in Austin , Texas ) is an American television journalist . He has been with CBS since 1969 . From 1973 to 1977 he was anchorman for the CBS Sunday Night News , then until 1996 anchorman for the Saturday edition of the CBS Evening News . In the presidential election campaigns in 2004 , 2008 and 2012 , Schieffer moderated the last of the television debates between the two candidates.

Early years

Bob Lloyd Schieffer was born on February 25, 1937 in the Texas capital Austin and grew up in Fort Worth , also in Texas. There he studied journalism at Texas Christian University . After graduating in 1959, Schieffer served in the US Air Force for three years . He then worked for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram newspaper , which, thanks to him, brought out four special editions on the day of the assassination of John F. Kennedy . Schieffer had brought Marguerite Oswald, the mother of the alleged assassin Lee Harvey Oswald , to Dallas and was her companion at the police station, where her son was held in custody. It was only after several hours that he was exposed as a reporter by an FBI agent . In 1965 Schieffer reported from Vietnam as the first employee of a Texan newspaper . A little later he switched from the newspaper to the local television station WBAP-TV (today: KXAS-TV), where he worked as a reporter and presenter of the 10 p.m. news. Via a stopover at the Washington local broadcaster WTTG-TV, Schieffer joined the nationwide network Columbia Broadcasting Corporation ( CBS ) in 1969 .

Careers at CBS

Schieffer acted from 1972 to 1977 as a presenter of the CBS Sunday Evening News and then until 1996 as a presenter of the CBS Saturday Evening News . Between 1970 and 1974 he was assigned to reporting for the United States Department of Defense , from 1974 to 1979 the CBS correspondent for the White House and in 1982 he became chief correspondent for Washington in addition to his moderation work. Since 1991 Schieffer has hosted the weekly interview program Face the Nation with Bob Schieffer , which is always broadcast on Sunday mornings. As in the Press Club program , journalists and guests discuss current issues of domestic and foreign policy. After Schieffer resigned from his work as a news anchor (News Anchor) at CBS in 1996 , he became chief presenter again after the controversial departure from Dan Rather in 2005. For a year and a half he ran the weekly issues of the CBS Evening News .

Bob Schieffer moderated the last of the three television debates leading up to the 2004 presidential election ( George W. Bush and John Kerry ), 2008 ( Barack Obama and John McCain ) and 2012 (Barack Obama and Mitt Romney ).

Private life

Schieffer is the older brother of Tom Schieffer , a friend and former business partner of ex-President George W. Bush . Tom Schieffer was US Ambassador to Australia from 2001 to 2005, then to Japan until the beginning of 2009.

Bob Schieffer married Patricia Penrose Bishop in 1967. You live in Washington and have two daughters and three granddaughters.

In 2003 Schieffer survived a bladder cancer disease.

Awards

Schieffer has received numerous awards over the course of his career. These include six Emmys , including one for life's work, and two Sigma Delta Chi Awards from the Society of Professional Journalists .

The journalism department at Texas Christian University was named after Schieffer in 2005 and is now called the Bob Schieffer School of Journalism .
