Hilarion Capucci BA or Hilarion Kapudschi (born March 2, 1922 in Aleppo , † January 1, 2017 in Rome ) was a Syrian Greek Catholic theologian , auxiliary bishop of the Melkite Patriarchate of Antioch and political activist .

Life

After studying Greek Catholic theology and liturgy in a seminary Capucci was on July 20, 1947 priests of the Order of Basilian of Aleppo ordained . After almost two decades of pastoral work for Melkite believers, he was appointed auxiliary bishop of the Melkite Patriarchate of Antioch in Damascus on July 30, 1965 with the title of Archbishop. Political Actions

Capuccio supported the urging of the Palestinians for a state of their own . He argued that the solidarity of Christians with their Muslim fellow citizens could defuse the threatening struggle of the Abrahamic religions against one another because it combines the common high good of justice .

In August 1974, while attempting to smuggle small arms and explosives into Palestinian territory, Capucci was arrested by the Israeli military and subsequently sentenced by a court to twelve years' imprisonment. The intervention of the Holy See resulted in his release from custody three years later.

In the 1980s, Capucci became a member of the Christian Peace Conference . He worked at the VI. All-Christian Peace Assembly in 1985 in Prague and was elected to its committee to continue the work.

Capucci protested against the Iraq war in 2003 and wrote the foreword to a book by the American naval officer John Sharpe in which he called for a condemnation of the Iraq war.

In February 2009, Capucci was on board a Lebanese ship that was supposed to deliver relief supplies to the people of the Gaza Strip , bypassing the Israeli sea ​​blockade . The ship was seized by the Israeli Navy and the shipment was confiscated.

In May 2010, Capucci accompanied a ship convoy of the Free Gaza movement that was boarded by the Israeli Navy ( Ship-to-Gaza incident ). Capucci was on board the ship Mavi Marmara , on which nine people were killed. He was first held in Beersheba prison and then deported.
