Athanasios Toutoungi

Athanasios Toutoungi (born September 6, 1899 in Alexandrette ( Turkey / Syria ), † February 20, 1981 ) was an archbishop of the Melkite Greek Catholic Church in Syria.

Life

Athanasios Toutoungi was ordained a priest on July 20, 1927 .

He received his appointment to succeed Basilio Khouri as Archbishop of Homs on October 1, 1938, and was ordained bishop on November 27, 1938 . Archbishop Jean Bassoul succeeded him in this office .

On December 5, 1961, Toutoungi was appointed successor to Isidore Fattal as Archbishop of Aleppo and held this office until his retirement on March 6, 1968, at the same time he was appointed titular Archbishop of Tarsus dei Greco-Melkiti and was until his death on February 20, 1981 Old Archbishop of Aleppo, succeeded by Néophytos Edelby . He was a participant in all four sessions of the Second Vatican Council (1962–1965). During his tenure, he dedicated Justin Abraham Naimy BA Bishop of Newton ( Massachusetts , USA ) and was Mitkonsekrator at the Archbishops Paul Achkar , Hilarion Capucci and Elias Nijmé .
