Paul Achkar

Paul Achkar ( Arabic بولس أشقر; * February 3, 1893 in Damascus , Syria ; † April 23, 1982 ) was the first Archbishop of the Melkite Greek Catholic Church of Latakia in Lebanon.

Life

Paul Achkar was ordained a priest on August 15, 1921 , and was appointed Archbishop of Latakia on September 20, 1961. The election was confirmed on November 11, 1961 by the Holy See . On December 17, 1961, the Patriarch of Antioch Maximos IV. Cardinal Sayegh SMSP donated the episcopal ordination ; Co -consecrators were Archbishop Athanasios Toutoungi of Aleppo and Archbishop Joseph Elias Tawil , Auxiliary Bishop in Antioch . From 1962 to 1965 he participated in the four sessions of the Second Vatican Council . He was co-consecrator in the episcopal ordinations of Bishop Justin Abraham Najmy BA (Patriarchal Exarch of the United States ), Nicolas Naaman SMSP (Archbishop of Bosra and Hauran ) and Joseph-Marie Raya (Archbishop of Akka ). From 1974 to 1975 he was part-time Patriarchal Vicar of Jerusalem . He was born on 18 August 1981 at the age of 88 years, following the age determinations emeritus . Michel Yatim was appointed his successor .
