Raffaello da Montelupo

Raffaello di Bartolomeo Sinibaldi , also known as Raffaele Sinibaldi , better known under the name Raffaello da Montelupo after his birthplace (* around 1505 in Montelupo Fiorentino near Florence ; † around 1566 in Orvieto ), was an Italian sculptor and builder .

Life

Da Montelupo learned from his father Baccio da Montelupo and worked with him in Carrara and Lucca , where after the death of his father he completed the tombs for Bishop Silvestro Gigli and for Giano Grillo. From 1524 he worked with Giano Grillo at the Capella Chigi in Rome, which he left after the Sacco di Roma .

He then worked in Loreto until 1533 , where he continued the decoration of the Casa Santa in Sansovino . Finally, he worked with Michelangelo in Florence in the Basilica di San Lorenzo , where he executed his masterpiece, the statue of Saint Damian , based on a design by Michelangelo.

In 1543 he returned to Rome, where he created, among other things, the statue of Pope Leo X in the main niche of his funerary monument in the Basilica of Santa Maria sopra Minerva . He was commissioned by Pope Paul III. As a master builder at the Castel Sant'Angelo, responsible for its restoration and created, among other things, the angel , who stood on its top from 1544 to 1752.

From 1552 until his death he was master builder at Orvieto Cathedral .
