Hermitage of Gamogna
The Hermitage of Gamogna ( it. : Eremo di Gamogna ) is a hermitage in a remote area of the Apennine between Tuscany and Romagna in the municipality of Marradi . It is also dubbed the Eremo di San Pier Damiani .
history
The hermitage was founded by Petrus Damiani in 1053 and dedicated to the apostle Barnabas . The hermitage was used by monks from Camaldoli who belonged to the Acereta and Della Valle abbey . On November 14, 1532, the Gamogna chapel was closed for lack of monks and converted into a parish church. In 1850 the hermitage of Gamogna was added to the territory of the Faenza-Modigliana diocese .
The church has a Romanesque structure with a simple facade, a large semicircular apse with a conical roof covered with slabs of slate and a bell tower. From 1991 restoration work was carried out.
In 1998 the hermitage of Gamogna was given to the French fraternity of fraternities in Jerusalem by the bishop of Faenza .
