Cardinal Gualtiero Bassetti (born April 7, 1942 in Popolano, Marradi ) is an Italian clergyman, Roman Catholic Archbishop of Perugia-Città della Pieve .

Life

Gualtiero Bassetti occurred in 1956 in the seminary of Florence and studied philosophy and Catholic theology . The Archbishop of Florence , Cardinal Ermenegildo Florit , ordained him on June 29, 1966 . He then worked as a chaplain in the parish of San Michele in San Salvi and later at the Minor Seminary , of which he became rector in 1972. In 1979, Gualtiero Bassetti was appointed rector of the seminary in Florence by Cardinal Giovanni Benelli . In 1990 he became Pro-Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Florence, from 1992 Vicar General .

Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Massa Marittima-Piombino on July 9, 1994 . The Archbishop of Florence, Silvano Cardinal Piovanelli , donated him episcopal ordination on September 8th of the same year ; Co- consecrators were Antonio Bagnoli , Bishop of Fiesole , and Giovanni Bianchi , Bishop Emeritus of Pescia . On November 21, 1998 he was appointed Bishop of Arezzo-Cortona-Sansepolcro and on February 6 of the next year he was appointed to the office. On July 16, 2009 he was appointed Archbishop of Perugia-Città della Pieve and on October 4, 2009 he was appointed to the office. On June 29, 2010 he received the pallium in St. Peter's Basilica .

Gualtiero Bassetti was Grand Officer of the Order of the Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem and since 2009 Prior of the Order in Umbria . In 2017, Cardinal Grand Master Edwin Frederick O'Brien was appointed Grand Cross Knight.

Since 2009 he has been Vice-President of the Italian Bishops' Conference . On October 5, 2012, he was elected President of the Regional Bishops' Conference of Umbria. Pope Francis appointed him President of the Italian Bishops' Conference on May 24, 2017.

In the consistory of February 22, 2014 Pope Francis took him as a cardinal priest with the titular church of Santa Cecilia in Trastevere in the College of Cardinals on.
